Often times we hear of hunger and tragedies in other countries or in other parts of the U.S., but have you ever really thought about the people in need in our own community? Where would you go if you faced hard times?

The Lighthouse Mission is Whatcom and Skagit Counties only rescue mission for men, women and children. They are funded 100% by private donations. They rely solely on contributions from individuals, businesses and churches in our community in order to provide these services to those in need. They are outcome based which means they do everything in their power to help their guests address the underlying causes that lead to their homelessness. Since 1923 they have been open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Serving three hot meals every day. Last year alone they provided 45,597 nights of lodging, including 10,211 nights lodging to women and children. In addition, they also served 117,395 hot meals last year.

Food and shelter is not the only thing the Lighthouse Mission provides. They have many other programs and services available to help restore lives and renew hope to those in need. Here are just a few…..

  1. Drop-in Center:  Open to all. Houses the Sea Mar Medical Clinic (averages 30 patients every Wednesday) and an Eye Clinic.

  1. Special Needs Shelter:  People suffering from mental illness are given an opportunity to connect with the various mental health providers for more extensive help.

  1. Medical Respite for Men & Women:   For homeless Men and Women requiring continued therapy and medication.

  1. Single Women’s Shelter:  The main reasons for homelessness are abuse, the breakdown of families and loss of jobs.

  1. Agape Home:  Women and children shelter. There are 21 bedrooms; additional space allows for a New Life Program for Women.

  1. New Life Program:  One year commitment; desire to make a change in their lives. There are extensive counseling sessions, job training and work training.

  1. Transitional Housing:  Houses graduates in the program who are in transition; men who are working, in school or are permanently disabled and need a long-term supportive environment.

  1. Distribution Center:  Free clothing, furniture and personal need items are available.

The ability for all this to work and to keep the outreach going, really rests on the generosity and help from our community.  We at Mt. Baker Harley-Davidson would like to do our part to help this great organization by hosting a Benefit Auction and Holiday Fashion Show on Thursday, December 15th @ 7:00pm. All proceeds from the Auction will benefit the Lighthouse Mission and Agape House programs. Plus, after the Fashion Show, if you make a donation at your time of purchase, you can roll the dice for additional savings off Genuine Harley-Davidson Licensed Products.

As we are enjoying our friends and families during the holidays, let us also extend a little hope and joy to those who really need it right now.

Thank You,

Greg Head, Mt. Baker Harley-Davidson
